This Saturday, notoriously bitter comic book artist Jim Terry was literally laughed out of a comic book store: when nobody showed up for his signing.
Things seemed to be going well - the degenerate arrived on time with his “new” comic book, Coma D. Clown #2, tucked under his arm and he appeared sober and recently bathed. Things took a turn for the worse, however, when the store opened its doors and the sour illustrator faced a confused crowd, none of whom knew who he was.
Things escalated when the disillusioned scribbler stood on the table and sang, in a tearful and near perfect Teddy Pendergras impersonation: Where Are All My Friends?
He was detained by a group of ten year old children who were there to buy Voltron Comics and have them signed by well-known and well-loved writer Josh Blaylock. The disgraced Terry was then asked to leave and his comic books were tossed onto the street after him. Oddly, he simply levitated and vanished.
His current whereabouts are unknown.

Yes, it is finally here, and it is only upon the power of one little cockroach. I was lying in bed, trying to sleep, worried about how I was going to print Coma #2 when I heard a voice very similar to William Holden’s, except it was higher in pitch and almost impossible to hear. I leaned toward the light of the alarm clock and saw a cockroach who we’ll call Billy, perched on my glasses and smoking a cigar. After some discussion about today’s economy he agreed to front the printing bill in exchange for a pair of Zircon encrusted tweezers, with the understanding I never ask what they are to be used for.
So now it’s here, it’s printed, I don’t know where Billy is but I’ll tell you I’m signing the Clown books this Saturday, Oct. 11 at THE COMIC VAULT on Montrose and Ashland avenues, between eleven am and one pm as part of their gala 2 year anniversary. It’s really an honor to be a part of this for me, Matt Sardo - owner/proprietor of the Comic Vault, is truly one of the most decent fellas I’ve been lucky enough to meet and it’s to his credit that not only the shop is still alive but he has not turned into a raving, murderous lunatic. These are tough times, and it would mean the world if folks would drop by and support this fella’s fine store. Oh yeah, and pick up a copy of Coma D. Clown #2 while you’re there.
I, personally, am a bit excited to unleash this issue - it’s the first work to be printed after my discovery of Eisner, me hero. Thus, the work is dramatically different (to me) and is, I feel, the first step in the maturation of this artist. I hope you’ll swing by and support a couple of indie dogs like Sardo and me. See you at the Comic Vault.
